The sampling stage decides how smoothly your OEM project runs. Brands that arrive prepared get accurate samples in one round; brands that do not, burn weeks on revisions. This guide lists exactly what to prepare before you ask a pet products factory to develop your sample.
What to Send the Factory
1. Design drawings or a reference sample
A tech pack is ideal: dimensions, materials per panel, color references (Pantone codes), stitching requirements and logo placement. If you have no tech pack, a physical reference sample plus clear notes works — an experienced factory can reverse-engineer it and confirm the spec back to you in writing.
2. Sizing information
For pet clothes and harnesses, provide the size range and target pet breeds and weights. A sample made for a 5 kg cat tells you nothing about a 30 kg dog harness. Agree the full size chart before sampling, not after.
3. Branding artwork
Send your logo as vector files (AI, EPS or PDF). Raster logos from websites need to be redrawn and often delay sampling. Specify branding method — embroidered, printed, woven label — and position.
4. Target price and quantity
Tell the factory your target cost and expected order volume. The same toy can be made at several price points by adjusting fabric weight, filling density and packaging. Honest targets get honest engineering.
The Sample Round, Step by Step
- Quotation and spec confirmation — the factory confirms materials, dimensions and price in writing.
- Sample production — typically 5–10 working days for soft goods.
- Your review — check size accuracy, material feel, seam quality, branding position and packaging.
- Revision or approval — mark changes clearly on photos; one or two revision rounds are normal.
- Sealed sample — the approved sample becomes the production standard and QC reference.
Common Sampling Mistakes to Avoid
- Approving a sample photographed from only one angle
- Changing specs verbally without updating the written specification
- Skip-checking packaging — it is part of the product experience
- Ordering mass production before the sealed sample is signed off
