Quality control is where pet toy sourcing is won or lost. Pets chew, pull and bite their toys to destruction — which is exactly what buyers want them to do safely. This guide explains the QC standards a professional pet toys factory should follow, and what you should require before accepting a shipment.
Start With Safe, Declared Materials
Every material in a pet toy should be declared and traceable:
- Plush and fabrics: non-toxic dyes, azo-free colorants
- Fillings: clean, new PP cotton — never recycled unknown fiber
- Rubber and TPR: food-grade, BPA-free, phthalate-free compounds
- Small parts: squeakers and eyes must be secured so they cannot be swallowed
Ask your supplier for material declarations and, for regulated markets, EN 71 or ASTM test reports from third-party labs.
In-House Testing Every Factory Should Perform
Pull and seam strength
Seams are the failure point of any plush toy. A pull test on finished seams — not just fabric — verifies the stitching holds under realistic bite force. Reinforced double stitching should be visible on every seam.
Chew durability
Rubber and TPR toys should be sample-tested for tear resistance and rebound. A chew toy that cracks after minutes of use generates refunds and reviews you do not want.
Squeaker and accessory retention
Squeakers and decorative parts must survive repeated biting without detaching. This is a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one.
AQL Inspection: The Industry Standard
Professional importers use the AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) system, most commonly AQL 2.5 for major defects and 4.0 for minor defects. Define your defect list before production: loose threads, stained fabric, weak seams, incorrect label placement, packaging errors. A supplier who resists AQL inspection is telling you something important.
Pre-Shipment Checklist for Buyers
- Approved sealed sample on file at the factory
- Materials match the declared specification
- Random inspection per AQL with a written report
- Labels, hang tags and packaging checked against your artwork
- Carton drop test for export packaging
